Honor says its new and updated Magicbook 14 laptop can run for 17 hours on a single charge of its 75Wh battery.

Claims like this are often proven wrong with real-world testing, but the rest of the laptop also looks impressive.

It was launched at the IFA tech trade show in Berlin and is the first time Honor has put its OS Turbo, its system-level energy saving algorithm, in one of its laptops.

The Magicbook 14 starts from €1,099 with a 12th-gen Intel Core i5-12500H with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. You’ll have to pay even more if you want the high end version with the same specs plus a dedicated Nvidia GeForce RTX 2050 graphics card.

The asking price is up considerably from £799/€849 of the 2021 model with Core i5, and Honor seems to be gunning for the premium Windows laptop market. It’s a competitive price band with great alternatives from Huawei and Microsoft, though Honor’s design here wont necessarily stand out as its firmly in the generic silver laptop camp popularised by the MacBook Air.

It’s what’s under the hood that counts though, and its beefy 75Wh battery is joined by a a 135W fast charger that Honor says can give the computer 3.5 hours of juice from a 15-minute charge and will be full from empty in 80. Keeping it cool under such power load are two fans and a tweaked design that encourages heat dissipation.

As well as a 2.1k display and fingerprint sensor, the Magicbook 14 also comes with Honor’s proprietary Honor Share tech, which will be very impressive if it works as seamlessly as the company makes out.

You can mirror your phone’s screen on your laptop, take a call on it, or use its keyboard to enter text onto your phone or tablet. There’s also drag and drop from one device to another that looks like a great alternative to tech like Apple’s AirDrop.

With Honor also announcing the Honor 70 phone and Pad 8 tablet, the company is pushing its own ecosystem more this year. The Magicbook 14 also takes advantage of Honor’s Device Clone software that lets people to move all their data from their old laptop over to the new one. Little touches like this are important if Honor wants to become a reliable mainstay in European computing, so it’s good to see the company introducing new features.

The new Magicbook 14 will go on sale in Europe on 22 September. We will have a full review soon. In the meantime, find out what devices won our Best of IFA 2022 awards.
